# How Much to Mark Up White Label SEO Services

How much to mark up white label SEO services, worked through properly: wholesale cost, servicing hours, floor margin, and what your market will pay.

Most agencies answer this with a multiple. Two times wholesale, or three if the market allows it, and the number gets applied to every account without much thought after that.

How much to mark up white label SEO services is the wrong question when it is asked that way. A multiple assumes every account costs the same to service, and no roster has ever worked like that. The client who emails twice a month and the client who calls every Tuesday carry identical wholesale costs and produce very different margins.

This guide works the calculation properly. What wholesale actually covers, which hours you absorb without noticing, how to set a floor margin, and why two accounts at the same cost can land far apart. If you want to see how tiers are usually constructed first, our white label SEO packages (https://dialedinweb.com/white-label-seo-packages) page lays out one structure.

## The Multiple Everyone Quotes Hides the Real Number

Ask around and you will hear the same range. Two to three times wholesale, sometimes four for smaller accounts where the absolute dollar figure feels low.

That range is not wrong exactly. It is just incomplete, because it only accounts for one of the two costs in the transaction.

Wholesale is the visible cost. It arrives as an invoice, it is easy to track, and every agency knows the number. The second cost is your own time, and almost nobody prices it. Client calls, report reviews, revision rounds, billing questions, the Slack message asking why a keyword dropped. None of that appears on any invoice, and all of it comes out of the same margin.

An agency running a clean two times markup on a high maintenance client can end up working for less than it pays its junior staff.

## Wholesale Cost Is Only Half of What You Spend

Start with what your provider charges, then add what the account takes out of your week.

A reasonable way to count it is to track one account honestly for a month. Every call, every email thread, every report you read before forwarding. Most agency owners are surprised by the total, and the surprise is usually on the high side.

Here is an illustrative example using round figures. These are not our rates and should not be read as a benchmark. They exist to show the shape of the math.

Wholesale costs you $800 a month and you sell the engagement at $2,400. Gross margin reads $1,600, which looks like a comfortable 67 percent.

Now count the servicing. Two client calls, one report review, three rounds of edits, and a billing question adds up to roughly six hours. At an internal cost of $100 an hour, that is $600 gone. Real margin is $1,000, or 42 percent.

Same account, same invoice, and a very different picture depending on which number you look at.

## Account Management Time Is the Variable That Moves Everything

Two accounts can carry identical wholesale costs and produce margins twenty points apart. The gap is almost always handling.

Some clients are cheap to service. They read the report, they approve things quickly, and they call when something matters. Others need a conversation about every ranking movement, want changes explained twice, and treat your account manager as an extension of their own team.

Neither type is a bad client. They just cost different amounts to keep, and pricing them identically means one of them is subsidizing the other.

The practical move is to estimate servicing hours during the sales conversation rather than discovering them in month three. A prospect who asks detailed questions before signing will ask detailed questions afterward, and that is useful information rather than a warning sign.

## Floor Margin Beats a Markup Multiple

A multiple tells you what to charge. A floor margin tells you whether to take the account at all, which is the more useful instrument.

Setting one takes three inputs. Your wholesale cost for the scope in question. Your estimated servicing hours, converted to dollars at your internal rate. And the minimum profit that makes an account worth the operational weight it adds.

Once those three numbers exist, the pricing conversation changes shape. You stop asking what multiple feels right and start asking whether the retail price your market supports clears the floor. Sometimes it does not, and the correct answer is to decline or to reduce scope until it does.

That is a harder conversation than applying a multiple. It is also the one that keeps a roster profitable as it grows.

## Scope Changes Move Your Markup Whether You Adjust It or Not

Most margin erosion is silent. Nothing gets renegotiated, nothing gets flagged, and the account quietly becomes less profitable over eighteen months.

The pattern is familiar. A client adds two service pages, then a second location, then asks for a monthly call that used to be quarterly. Each request is small enough to absorb and none of them triggers a pricing conversation. Together they add three hours a month and two hundred dollars of wholesale cost that nobody reprices.

The defense is a documented scope of work with deliverable tiers defined by count rather than category. Pages, links, keywords, hours. When a request falls outside the written count, it is visible, and visible requests get priced.

This matters more with retainers than with project work, because retainers are where drift hides best.

## Client Churn Changes the Math Retroactively

An account that leaves in month four never really earned its markup, regardless of what the monthly margin looked like.

Onboarding costs are real and they are front loaded. Kickoff calls, access gathering, the first audit review, the internal handoff to your provider. Spread across twelve months those hours disappear into the noise. Spread across four they consume most of the margin.

This is the argument for pricing longer relationships slightly differently from short ones, and for being cautious with prospects who are shopping primarily on price. An account won on a thin margin and lost in a quarter costs more than it returns.

It is also an argument for reporting that keeps clients around. A client who can see progress asks fewer anxious questions and stays longer, which improves both halves of the calculation at once. That is where white label reporting (https://dialedinweb.com/white-label-reporting) earns its place in the cost stack rather than sitting outside it.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much should an agency mark up white label SEO?

No single multiple fits every agency or every account. Work backward instead: take your wholesale cost, add the servicing hours your team absorbs, then set a retail price that clears your floor margin. The right markup is whatever meets that floor in your particular market.

### Is two times wholesale a reasonable markup?

It can be, for a low maintenance account in a market that supports the retail price. It is thin for a client who needs frequent calls, frequent revisions, or heavy reporting. The multiple is not the problem. Applying the same multiple to every account is.

### Should markup change by service line?

Often, yes. Services that require more coordination on your side, such as content approvals or anything touching a client's developer, consume more of your hours than services that run quietly. Pricing them identically means one line subsidizes another.

### How do you price an account that needs constant attention?

Either raise the retail price to cover the servicing hours, or reduce the scope until the hours match what the client pays. The third option, absorbing the difference quietly, is the one most agencies choose and the one that causes trouble later.

### What is a floor margin and how do you set one?

A floor margin is the minimum profit that makes an account worth its operational weight. Set it using your wholesale cost, your estimated servicing hours at internal rates, and a profit figure you would still accept on a difficult month. Anything below the floor gets repriced or declined.

## Next Steps for Agency Owners

Four things worth doing this week.

Pick one client and track every hour spent on them for a month. Calls, emails, report reviews, everything. The number will be higher than your estimate.

List your current retail prices in one place rather than across old proposals, and put the wholesale cost beside each one.

Decide your floor margin, write it down, and apply it to the next quote you send.

Ask any provider you are evaluating for a written deliverable count. Counts, not categories, because a scope you cannot measure is a scope you cannot price against.

If a worked reference would help, our programs and pricing (https://dialedinweb.com/programs-and-pricing) page shows one way tiers and rates can be structured.

## The Number You Cannot See Is the One That Matters

Wholesale cost is easy to track because someone sends you an invoice for it every month. Servicing time is harder, which is exactly why it goes uncounted and exactly why margins drift.

An agency that knows its real cost per account can price quickly and decline confidently. An agency working from a multiple is guessing, and the guess holds right up until it meets a client who needs more than average.

The arithmetic here is genuinely dull. It is also the difference between a roster that pays and a roster that only looks like it does.
